Firefox's Biggest Problem: Tab Freezes, Browser Crashes

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I love Firefox, but I hate Firefox.

firefoxcropcircle.jpgYou know exactly what I'm talking about: you've got a number of tabs open, one of the pages you're visiting decides to freeze, and your entire browser crashes.

Shit.

It has to be the most annoying aspect of the browser.

Why can't I close the one tab that's causing all the problems? Wouldn't that make the most sense?

Not even the "Restore Session" feature helps with this — it will just re-open the problematic tab.

I haven't looked into Firefox3 at all, but hopefully they've taken the time to fix this problem.

John C. Dvorak(.org/blog) complains about this all the time too — maybe they'll listen to him.

(P.S. Dvorak is easily the most entertaining member of TWiT — the show isn't the same when he's not on).

  1. Yeah, Firefox crashes quite frequently for me too. It just came out of the blue too. I had zero problems with Firefox until recently. Luckily for me, the restore session button works like a charm and has saved me a couple of times! I've noticed that GMail seems to crash FireFox a lot of times. I think Google made some updates a few weeks ago that really broke some things with specific FireFox addons and I believe that was the problem.

  2. What you're suggesting isn't as easy as it sounds. When a particular tab causes an illegal operation such as an access violation, it's detected by the operating system and the program is terminated. So it's not really Firefox's decision to close the whole app or just a tab. When Firefox is reopened, it knows that the previous run wasn't closed cleanly, but it doesn't know why since Firefox didn't detect the error, the OS did. I'm not saying a solution is impossible, but it's certainly not a trivial fix.
