5 Steps to Making It (Big)
Posted by junger - 08/24/06 at 03:08:05 pmI'm all about making it big here at Making It Big, so when I saw "The get-started guide to making it" on CNNMoney.com (via Young and Broke), I had to know.
The tips are good, mostly common sense but worth re-iterating. These are all within the context of working for someone else, which is not exactly what I consider "making it," but everyone has his or her own definition.
Ask for help, then take charge
One of the things that kills me about working with other people is the need for constant reminders about getting things done or how to do things. I used to be in a position where I needed someone else to do something for me because I did not know how to do it; rather than continually request this relatively minor task, I asked him to show me how to do it. He hasn't done it since.
Know the boss
This is a great tip. This is the only other person who can ultimately decide your fate (the first, obviously, being you) and you have to know their quirks. But don't be a phony brownnoser — honesty is definitely the best policy in this case.
Cultivate good relationships
This is obviously common sense. The better you interact with people, the more successful your relationships will be.
Don't watch the clock
I had a few ridiculously boring summer jobs where all I would do is watch the clock. I was a clock-watcher because I was bored, but because I wasn't interested in working. If you watch the clock because you hate working, quit. Or, if you're like me, then move on to step five …
But know when to go
If you don't have enough to do, or don't see room for growth (either for yourself or for your company), move on. The same applies for a startup — if it isn't going anywhere, move on.
