5 Reasons Why Transparency Rules The Internet
Posted by junger - 08/23/06 at 09:08:00 pmThe Internet has revolutionized the way that information is communicated, distributed and discovered. Want to find a piece of information about anything or anyone? The Web is the first place you go.
Anything and everything can be found online, and Web surfers now expect to be in the loop when it comes to product development, as well. The open source movement thrives online and has pushed open, transparent methods of product development.
On the Internet, transparency rules. Here's 5 reasons why online products should be developed transparently.
- Constructive Criticism Aids Your Product
Why wouldn't you want the masses to have their say regarding your product before you formally launch? You have a huge community that will tell you what they think (even if you didn't ask for it), and it makes more sense to have them critique your product while it is in development, rather than fully available. - Being Transparent Shows You Have Nothing to Hide
If your cards are all laid out on the table, then you can never be accused of hiding something. - You're Much More Likely to Please Your Users
Consider transparency like an IPO, except your users are your investors. You want to please them, and they want to have a say in their investment. - Trust Will Be Established
By being transparent with users and potential clients, you will gain their trust. They see that you are offering your hard work to them, and will return the gesture with trusting your goodwill. - Transparency is a Great Promotion Tool
Potential users are interested in the development updates you publish and will invest their time in reading them. A time investment means a dedication to the product, which spurs word-of-mouth promotion.
There are obviously some things that you do not want to make public until you are confident in your product's timetable, such as your specific idea and product name. But that's completely acceptable, and your audience will know that.
How has Internet transparency worked for you?
