Web publishers know that retaining visitors is a huge part of what makes a site successful, both through brandname awareness and building community. But converting a drive-by surfer into a Web regular can be difficult, especially if the right wheels aren't in place.

But really, all it takes is one easy, 2 minute update to any Web publication to boost the rate of regular visitors to at least three, maybe four times normal.

So what is this magic step? Making your RSS feed discoverable.

When a new user comes to your site, probably through a link from somewhere else, you've only got one shot to turn them into a regular. Having the RSS feed discoverable by the user's browser allows them to easily and quickly save your site for later and figure out whether or not you have the content they are looking for.

But if the surfer has to find a text link or an RSS page to add your link, then you may as well have just told them that you don't want them coming back — because that's how they will feel.
