5 Promotion Techniques That Cost Nothing More Than Time
Posted by junger - 08/11/06 at 02:08:03 pmWhen it comes to a new product or a blog, promotion can be just as important as functionality. If you have a great product but no one knows about it, then it'll never make it big.
But small businesses and online business don't always have the monetary resources to market and promote their product in the way that, say, Vonage does. But that doesn't mean that promotion has to come slowly and contained.
We've got five promotion techniques that cost nothing more than the time you invest in them.
- Social Networking and Crowdsourcing
Whether it's setting up a MySpace profile, submitting your URL to Digg, or running a contest on del.icio.us, the power of social networks can bring your product to easily thousands of people. Musicians are finding great success in setting up MySpace profiles, while any blogger yearns for the day that he gets that Digg traffic boost. - Posting on Forums and Blogs
Not only does posting on relevant forums and blogs give you the opportunity to add links to your product, but it helps you understand the community better and make a name for yourself. One of the key things to keep in mind is that your posting has to be useful — spamming forums and blogs will do much more harm to your reputation than the good from linking to your product. - Link to Blogs, Especially Ones that Post Trackbacks
When you link to other blogs, your readers will click through. Those bloggers will see incoming links from your site and check you out, and hopefully you've got the beginnings of a mutually successful relationship. If those blogs post trackbacks to their site, then you've just added a free link to your site from a blog that could have substantially more traffic than you. Do this carefully though — like posting in forums, if you're simply spamming them, then you'll get flamed and definitely shunned. - Get in Touch With Potential Users
Hopefully you know who the market is for your product. Let them know, whether it's a phone call or an email. It's the oldest and simplest form of promotion — contact with your target audience. - Work on Your SEO
On the Internet, your Google page rank is extremely important. Manage your site to maximize your rankings, especially when users search for your specific keywords. You don't need to pay anyone to do this — you can do it yourself simply by reading up on what others have done.
Good luck using these. You don't have to pay for promotion — in a best case scenario, others are doing all the work for you.

Wow Joe, thanks for the insightful comments.
If you're going to make some criticism of my site, why not use your real name and a real email address? Can't you handle backing up your statements?
Perhaps you should stick to your schoolwork at San Jose EverGreen Community College.
