Where to Work: Home or Office?
Posted by junger - 08/06/06 at 05:08:11 pmIn my current work situation, I'm pretty lucky in the fact that if I need to work at home, I have the option. So when the plumber or electrician needs to come, I don't have to take off a day or a half-day.
Of course, the fact that my job revolves around the computer and the Internet allows me to really get my work done anywhere — but sometimes working from home is not the best option.
There's no question that when you work at home, everything is more relaxed — whether it's the atmosphere, your attitude, or the fact that you can wear your pajamas. But I don't know if I could work at home all the time. Even though a relaxed atmosphere allows your creativity to flow better, being in the office puts me in the "work" mindset.
My general feeling is that working at home when it is needed is a good thing, as long as it doesn't come with decreased productivity. I doubt that I could do it more than every-so-often just because of the mindset, but I've never put in 9-5 hours at home.
Where do you get your best work done: in the office or at home? Let me know in a comment below.

You don't have to sleep less if you do blog work in the morning.
You have two choices to avoid that. First off, find out if you really have set hours at work. If you don't, come in an hour later, and eat (quickly) at your desk and just stay 10-15 minutes later in the evening.
You'll also save money from not going out in the day. A variation of this I actually do: I buy a breakfast on the way in, and take a fruit/other snack to eat midday if I get hungry.
Or you could just take the lunch and get home later (which can make you miss traffic).
Depending on where you work, you may just be able to be in the office less if you can get your work done faster. Check out Getting Things Done and other organizaation systems to see if that will net you a little more time.

Michael — all great tips. Thanks a bunch.
I'm lucky that my work hours aren't super-rigid — as long as I get my work done and put it 8 or so hours, I'm set.
