Goal: 75 RSS Subscribers in 2 Weeks

Posted by junger | August 6th, 2006

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

In my attempt to make it big, setting goals — realistic goals — is important. Without something specific to strive for, then I could end up just writing and wondering why those visitors, subscribers and Adsense dollars aren't coming in.

So, I've decided to set a series of goals, with the first being 75 RSS subscribers by Friday, August 18.

Since the site officially launched on Friday, August 4, I’ve got a grand total of two weeks to get 75 subscribers.

Help me out with my goal! I'll be tracking the number of subscribers with a Feedburner graphic underneath the big RSS logo in the sidebar.

To subscribe, click on the orange RSS logo in the sidebar or, if you are using Firefox or Safari (not sure about IE), subscribe with the logo in the URL bar. Or, click here to subscribe.

  1. Great goal … not sure how you're really going to measure it though.

I've been using Feedburner for a while, and I've noticed that the number of subscribres vascillates over time … it goes up and goes down.

I'm not sure if it has something to do with how it calculates "subscribers" … its not quite like a newsletter signup script where you're able to tell how many people sign up, because I'm not sure if there's any reliable way of telling how many / who is pulling up your RSS feeds every day.

In fact, Feedburner's own explanation goes something like this:
    ——————————————————————————————-
Subscribers is calculated by matching IP address and feed reader combinations, and then using our detailed understanding of the multitude of readers and aggregators and bots on the market to make additional inferences.
    ——————————————————————————————-

Their own special formula smells a little like black magic to me ;)
Anyway, good luck with it! Just a warning that your own numbers will go up and down with time.

    Cheers

  2. wow - a formidable goal - it took me close to a half year to get to 75, but goal setting is always a good process to go through. Good luck meeting the goal and would be interested in what other measures you take to increase it besides announcing it here. Would love to increase my base more, too.

  3. Tony,

My understanding with using FeedBurner in other sites is that your number of subscribers varies by day — so if 75 different people request my blog's feed on any day (at least one time), then my subscribers total 75.

But thanks for the good wishes.

PFA — I'll definitely let you know how it goes.

  4. Reader #4 reporting for duty.

Too bad you can't track subscribers to your Newsvine feed too.

  5. Ilyanep — that's a good question. I wonder if you can FeedBurner your Newsvine RSS feed, which would allow for tracking, etc. I'll have to check into that.

In any case, thanks for subscribing!
