5 Steps to a Professional Blog Site
Posted by junger - 08/05/06 at 11:08:06 pmI consider myself an "ideas man." I often come up with great ideas but don't necessarily know the best way to execute on them. That, of course, is why you bring aboard people who do know how to execute: whether it's developing a business plan or bringing a product to market.
One product I can execute quickly and professionally is a Web site or blog. In fact, putting together this blog took no more than an hour or two of my time — and less than $15.
So how do you do it?
- Get a domain name.
Having a real domain name is important. Sub-domains are OK if you have no other choice, but sparing the $10 to get a name is worth it. I already owned onlinesavingsblog.com (which I purchased for $13.50 from 000domains.com, a company I am loyal to) and it wasn't being used. When I wanted to start this blog, I figured I may as well use my investment. - Get hosting.
I didn't want to pay for all the hosting fees if I couldn't guarantee that I would be invested in another site. But because I subscribe to the RSS feeds for DealsPlus, I knew that Globat was offering six months of free hosting with no setup fees. Twenty minutes after signing up, I was set. - Get WordPress.
This is starting to sound a bit like a commercial, but I'm sincere. WordPress is the way to go for professional, customizable blogs these days. - Develop Content.
No one will come to your site if you don't have something of value, and unless you are giving away free money, then it's your content that has value. - Invest Your Time.
Anyone can tell if a site hasn't been updated recently or isn't designed well. Your customers or visitors will be able to see how much time you have invested in providing information or services to them just by checking out your site. Think about it — it's exactly what you do when you're visiting a new site.
Obviously, there's a lot more to a successful blog or Web site than these five steps. Advertising, promotion, and more are all extremely important. But these five steps should get you started in the right direction.
