How Do I Deal With Massive Commment Spam?
Posted by junger - 08/02/06 at 12:08:29 pmEver since my recent slashdotting, redditing and other high-profile pickups, I've been getting comment spam up to the wazoo.
I know that there has to be some sort of mechanism out there to either block or prevent or do a better job of filtering out spam, but how?
I'm not a fan of the "guess the distorted numbers and letters" box, mostly because I have sometimes trouble figuring them out, and I don't want to discourage people from commenting.
So what works? Is it a WordPress plug-in I don't know about, blocking some words in comments or what?
Help me out!

The strongest plugin for killing spam is Spam Karma 2. I have installed it on all my blogs and the spamming has completely stopped. You can find out more from http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/ and also download it from there.

I get emails every time a comment gets posted on the blog, and when my little email notifier popped up saying I had a comment on this blog, you don't know how worried I was that it was spam.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely check it out!

Akismet is amazing and free. You have to register with WordPress.com to get a key, then you're done.

Jamie, for some reason I can never find my API key, even when I follow the directions here.
WordPress never emailed me one when I signed up … what am I missing?
